Men’s Jacket: Norfolk Version—approximately 1860 to 1900. This pattern is a subset of 116 View C and only contains the pattern pieces and instructions to make the jacket pictured. If you have pattern 116 you already have the contents of this pattern.
This pattern was drafted using real period garments in the author's collection. The Norfolk was worn in informal situations and for sport. Men would wear this as country wear, and when shooting, golfing, hiking, and bicycling. View C is a Norfolk version that is different from a sack or lounge jacket in several respects. The front is called a “forward lounge” shape because it does not have a curved front at the bottom. It has applied pleats front and back, patch pockets, and a separate belt. It was often worn with “plus fours” which were trousers long enough to cover the knee “plus four inches”. The photos show it with pattern 119 trouser which are not included. Fabric: Wool—Plain weave, striped, checked, tweed, houndstooth, novelty weave. Linen or seersucker. Lining: Period is silk twill, silk satin, polished cotton. Modern is polyester. Pocketing is any sturdy cotton. Sleeve lining is traditionally white cotton fabric with small width stripes in colors. Interfacing: Fusible or sew in hair canvas for the front, optional fusible knit for the rest. Fusible stay tape. View C Notions: Eight 3/4” buttons (traditionally leather), four 1/2” buttons. All Views: Shoulder pads and optional chest pads.
